Ecological Rehabilitation St. Mary's Hospital
BBM has been commissioned to redevelop St Mary's Hospital. The project scope was large and focused on the following areas:
- Improving the power supply: a solar power system and modern Li-ion batteries now enable an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, uninterrupted power supply. Before this installation, up to five hours a day without electricity was not uncommon. Unimaginable for a hospital.
- Supply of an X-ray machine to improve medical care
- Refurbishment of the X-ray room, laboratory and Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT). The latter is used for health prevention and for voluntary health testing (e.g. with regard to HIV/Aids)
- Improve waste management: Training in waste separation, construction of an incinerator for infectious waste,...
- Establishment of a new outpatient department (OPD) to improve the possibility of outpatient treatment
- Improvement of sanitary facilities: It is common in Africa for sick people to be cared for by their relatives. They cook and care for their sick family members. However, the infrastructure did not exist until then.
- Construction of a private wing to generate income. The treatment is offered at very reasonable prices. Rented private sickrooms are used to refinance the costs of treatment for those on low incomes.
